# Z Original version: []( Version modified by Apollia: []( ---- ### Apollia's Notes 11:25:53 02/10/2019. **WARNING**: I still haven't figured out how to stop "z" from deleting things that I'd rather keep! So, it's probably best not to use this yet. End of text exclusively by Apollia. ---- Z is a simple and convenient front-end for the compress(1), uncompress(1), gzip(1), bzip2(1), lzip(1), xz(1), tar(1), zip(1) and unzip(1) utilities for compressing and uncompressing files and directories. See the included man page for full details. The basic idea behind z is that you can just run `z SOMETHING` where SOMETHING is any file, directory, compressed file or compressed archive, and z will do the right thing in a standard way. Simple for novices and convenient for experts. Great for unpacking downloads or compressing files to save space. Running `z -h` will provide a usage summary.
### Installation Apollia's note, 05:28:38 02/11/2019: It's best not to install it until I figure out how to stop it from deleting things it shouldn't delete. A nicely-formatted manual is in the "z.html" file.
### GPL Copyright Copyright (C) 1989-2013 Stephen B Kinzler Copyright (C) 2019 Apollia - []( This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.
